If you sell alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, CBD, or other age-restricted goods, EU rules — from national alcohol laws to the General Product Safety Regulation — require a real age check before checkout, not a self-tick "I confirm I am over 18" box. Document-upload verification kills conversion and adds a manual-review queue; get age checks wrong and you risk fines, chargebacks, and losing the licence to sell the product at all.
Verify age before checkout without collecting a birth date
The eIDAS Pro app adds an age gate to Shopify's checkout and cart and asks a shopper's bank eID a single question — are you over 18? — and gets back a boolean, never a date of birth. No document photos land on your server, no manual review queue, and the verdict is computed and re-checked server-side so it can't be spoofed from the browser or the checkout extension's sandbox.

How it works
Install the app
Install the eIDAS Pro app on your Shopify store and authorize the requested permissions. The cart-page gate works on every Shopify plan; the checkout-page extension requires Shopify Plus, since Shopify restricts checkout customization to Plus stores.
Connect your API key
Grab a free API key from the eIDAS Pro dashboard, paste it into the app's Settings page, and choose your minimum age and which collections or tags require verification.
Verify at checkout or in cart
Shoppers buying a restricted product scan a QR code with their national eID app and get an instant boolean 18+ result — seconds, not the 24-48 hours a manual document review takes. An orders/create webhook re-checks the result and tags the order as a backstop, with an optional hold on unverified orders.
Built to be checked, not just trusted
eIDAS Pro is built on @openeudi, our Apache-2.0 open-source SDK — you can read the verification logic yourself instead of taking a vendor's word for it. The Checkout UI Extension runs sandboxed with no access to your merchant API key; every verification call is proxied and authenticated by the app's own backend, and the result is checked a second time when the order is created. We never see or store the ID document behind an eID check; you only ever receive a signed 18+ verdict.
